The Rains of Castamere – Review

My Review

Above the Storm

14 year old Jackie Evancho has pulled a Wild Card from her magical talents and laid it on the table in the Game of Thrones. The Rains of Castamere is a simple song. It is a short song. It is not a remarkable melody. However, Jackie’s sultry voice, like a candle on a stormy night, brightens every note with a splendid reverie…what was, what is no more; yet remains in the heart – forever more.

Jackie demonstrated at the tender age of eight, her attraction, and indeed her deep understanding of the drama and pathos of melancholy, when she became possessed by the music and story of The Phantom of the Opera. It was a focus that would decide her future. Now, with The Rains of Castamere, she lends that same dimension of compassion and upliftment to memory, heartbreak and… somehow a hope of better things to come. This latter is unspoken in the words but lifted up above the storm by the tone and inflection she gives to the song. What especially commands my attention about Miss Evancho’s ability to reach into the depths of a tragic tale and offer it to the Light, is that she is by all appearances, a very happy person who is loved by her family and friends, with a brilliant talent and equally sparkling career ahead of her. Yet she can fast from the life she lives daily to sing of despair and longings of the soul and offer us such a simple yet transforming moment in music.
